EASUN was established in 1993 in Arusha, Tanzania, to address capacity development needs of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in East Africa. EASUN is an independent CSO that provides specialised services to other CSOs, including primarily: organisational development (OD) interventions; training of CSO leaders and programme staff in facilitation skills; leadership development workshops; and networking of CSOs.

Since 1993, EASUN has established working relationships with a number of organisations in East Africa and beyond, e.g. Community Development Resource Association (CDRA), South Africa, Reflective Learning - UK (RL-UK), United Kingdom, Organisation Development Network (ODN), Unites States, amongst others. The regional composition of EASUN staff and board members, however, gives it a unique opportunity for OD service provision in East Africa. Being a professional local organisation means that EASUN has a life long intimate knowledge of the organisational cultures and traditions that prevail in the East Africa region.

EASUN's work is overseen by a board of 7 NGO leaders from the East Africa region. EASUN's activities are managed by a secretariat based in Arusha, Tanzania, which is composed of ten staff originating from the three East African countries Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. EASUN's identity and potential as an institutional framework for developing OD practice in the region has emerged through a reformulation of its activities as Centre for Organisational Learning. The process of developing the Centre is ongoing and is a central feature of EASUN's own strategic development.
