Training for NGO Boards

If civil society is itself a dynamic context, what then, is to be demanded of its leadership?

Through its leadership development activities, EASUN has come to recognise that "good leadership" is all about active listening. Being an active listener enables a leader to perceive underlying issues and effectively manage processes that encourage learning and team work as avenues for transforming organisations.

As such, EASUN's training is in itself an intervention for transforming leadership in civil society; an intervention that capacitates CSOs to realise good governance.

EASUN has offered training for NGO boards since its pioneering workshop in May 2008. This special focus comes at the conclusion of a three year pilot activity of exploring transition challenges for pioneer leaders, which examined real cases of founder leaders handing over to a new generation of managers in their organisations. Three pilot workshops held between 2005 and 2007 brought together over 60 NGO leaders from Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. Key learning from these workshops pointed to the critical leadership entry point in managing change in civil society organisations.

What is NGO board training?

The training enables NGO Boards to identify the most effective ways to shape and manage structure, systems, work processes, and values in organisations. NGO Boards perform best when they are able to venture beyond traditional roles such as policy setting and performance oversight, and find new awareness and skills to guide NGOs toward being more beneficiary focused and accountable in sustaining both core purpose and core process of their organisations.

How is NGO Board training offered?

  • Consultancy: EASUN provides consultancy-based training for individual organisations.
  • Occasional workshops: For sensitisation of NGOs about the availability and importance of Board training.
