Course methodology: The FOD is a practical, hands-on training centred on participation and shared experiences of participants. Through the application of Action Learning as a methodology and process of the course, participants are trained in the art of facilitation, including working with tools and processes for managing resistance in development and change processes. The course comprises three one-week residential modules, spread over eight months. Within this time, a take-home project undertaken and presented by each participant forms the basis for individual as well as shared learning.

Course objectives: The FOD course aims to enable participants to acquire an understanding of the principles of organisational functioning, development and behaviour; develop skills to intervene in organisational processes so as to release organisation energy and enable the organisation to function more effectively; acquire tools and techniques to address organisational issues.

Who can attend: Participants from NGOs in East Africa, who are proposed by their respective organisations. The course is highly recommended for:

  • Leaders of organisations who are strategically placed to help their organisation develop its capacity. FOD transforms participants' perspective and approach to organisations, thus developing unique leadership qualities for the development of their organisations.
  • Senior programme officers who work to develop the capacities of member or client organisations. FOD also enables NGO Programme Officers to cultivate more effective skills, knowledge, attitude and posture in facilitating development processes at programme levels.

The participation of two staff members per organisation is particularly encouraged (although not a condition), as the best result will be achieved when two members of the same organisation can act as mutual mentors and function as a team.

Role of the participants: Participants will be expected to attend and complete all three modules; undertake and complete a learning /change project in their own organisations, which they will have to present during the course; allocate time for follow up and support.

The course curriculum covers: understanding OD, organisational functioning and behaviour; facilitating ownership of learning as a pre-requisite for change and development; facilitating individual and group development in organisational contexts; techniques and strategies in OD; introduction to self-development as a key component in organisational learning.

Course fees: Course fees are USD 1700. This amount covers full board expenses, course materials and course administration. The sending organisations are responsible for all travel costs for their participants as well as their miscellaneous expenses.
